Computed Nitrate Distribution

The image shows the computed nitrate distribution in Cobscook Bay in May. Cobscook Bay is on the border between Maine and Canada at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy in the Gulf of Maine. The Dennys river enters at the extreme left and is the major freshwater inflow. The connection to the Bay of Fundy is at the righ between Eastport on the north and Lubec on the south of the entrance.

The image is based on the mean tidal cycle distributions of temperature and salinity produced by a model application by Dr. Dave Brooks and his graduate students at TAMU. Nitrate is computed from a polynomial function in T and S based on observations made at 18 stations through two tidal cycles in May and again in July 1995. The standard error of the estimate is +/- 0.45 uM.

The image clearly shows the marine side to be the source of nitrate to the Bay with concentrations declining towards the mouth of the Dennys river. The lowest concentrations are found in the inlets to the north (Pembroke) and south (Whiting Bay) which have long residence times.
